FIRST ONLINE LOOK
AT THE THE SAYRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM |
|
After years of fund-raising activities, grants pursued and won, endless hours of work by both current and former board members, the Sayre Historical Society dream of establishing a Sayre museum became a reality with the opening of the first gallery—the Guthrie Healthcare Gallery. Not only for the first viewing by the public and local society members, but especially for those who have been in the society since its inception in 1989, it was a long-anticipated event. A few photographs are placed here so that online visitors can share in some of the displays of the museum’s first gallery. Other photographs will be displayed through the year. The photographs are arranged as if the visitor enters the museum from the south, through what will eventually be the Ken Bracken Entryway, past the handicapped-accessible elevator and the Burkhart Gift Shop. The museum fulfills our mission by “telling Sayre’s story,” of its development and growth and of its people. As you proceed through the museum’s first gallery, the displays begin with by telling how Sayre developed, including the three men who were instrumental at that time in its development: Howard Elmer, Robert Packer, and Robert Sayre. The displays continue with the famed Black Diamond train, the medical facilities through Dr. Donald Guthrie and others, the European immigrations, downtown Sayre and more. Presently the museum is closed so that work can proceed on the Redman-Stephens Gallery which will feature more Lehigh Valley Railroad displays. Work on other areas on the ground floor and upstairs will be undertaken in turn. For now, we proudly welcome you to your first online look of the Sayre Historical Society Museum.
